Summer & Fall Schedule for the New Moon Drum, Chant and Song Circles

The new moon chant, drum and song circles are held every month near the new moon. They are an open space to share and expand our drumming skills and song/chant repertoires. All skill levels are welcome (and encouraged!) Bring any songs or chants that you want to share and drums and other instruments if you have them.

Here are the dates for the rest of the new moon song, drum and chant circles this calendar year.

July: Friday July 20th, 2012 Facilitator: Melissa Moon
August: Wednesday August 15th, 2012
September: Friday September 14th
October: Wednesday October 17th
November: Wednesday November 14th
December: Friday December 14th

These monthly celebrations are organized by individual members of the Montreal Reclaiming community. All traditions are welcome.  They are generally held in a private home easily accessible by public transit (metro) and car.

Typically we will share songs and chant, share/learn drum rhythms, do some drum circle style drumming, and do some exercises to help us feel more comfortable improvising and harmonizing either as drummers or with our voice.

Let us know if you want to facilitate one of circles.

All circles start at 7:30pm and wrap up at 9:30 pm (out of courtesy to the neighbours!). Please arrive 5-10 minutes early so we can start on time.

If you are on Facebook, you can join the Facebook group for the events.

Please check the event page for the individual circles and contact the organiser for the exact location of each month’s circle. If you do not use Facebook, you can also email us at montrealreclaiming(at)grmail(dot)com for more information.

Popular Chants in our Community

Chanting and singing plays a large role in many Reclaiming communities, and our circles are no exception. Here is a list of some of our favourite chants, the ones we sing often, and some that we have made up ourselves.

Many of the chants listed here are traditional Reclaiming songs; authors are mentioned where known. If no credit is given, or the wrong credit is given, and you know who it should be attributed to, please let us know! Feel free to use the chants we have written in your own work, but we would love to know who’s singing them, and to have any feedback on them, so please contact us!

We are currently in the process of creating and uploading mp3 files, as well as sheet music, but this may take a while.

Animal spirits, teach us.

Animal spirits, heal us.

Creatures of the Air, may we fly with you
Creatures of the Earth, run beside you
Creatures of the Fire, set our hearts aglow
Creatures of the Water, teach us how to flow

Never Lose our Way to the Well
by Starhawk, Rose May Dance, and Raven Moonshadow

We will never
Never lose our way to the well
Of her memory
And the power
Of the living flame it will rise
It will rise again

Like the grasses
Through the dark, through the soil, to the sunlight
We will rise again
We are thirsting
For the waters of life we are moving
We will live again

New Moon Night
by Jeffrey Alphonsus Mooney

New moon night, soon mars in sight
Deep silence finds us when the words aren’t right
Free us from fear, may our hearts sing clear
Make a spark through the dark for our soul’s delight

In between eternity and this moment in time
Opening my heart feels like opening my mind
Standing with the ancients with each breath I play a part
Opening my mind feels like opening my heart

[alternate descant-like bit]I see myself in you [repeat]

And we can stop the fire of destruction
Healing is the fire running through our veins
