New Moon Chant, Drum and Song Circles

The new moon chant, drum and song circles are held every month near the new moon. They The a collaborative and an open space to and expand our drumming skills and song/chant repertoires. All skill levels are welcome (and encouraged!) Bring any songs or chants that you want to share and drums and other instruments if you have them.

These monthly celebrations are organized by individual members of the Montreal Reclaiming community. All traditions are welcome.  They are generally held in a private home easily accessible by public transit (metro) and car.

If you are on Facebook, you can join the Facebook group for the events.

The dates of the next circles are Friday February 24th (FB event here) and Thursday March 22nd (FB event here), 2012.

Please check the event page for the individual circles and contact the organiser for the exact location of each month’s circle. You can also email us at montrealreclaiming(at)grmail(dot)com.

Popular Chants in our Community

Chanting and singing plays a large role in many Reclaiming communities, and our circles are no exception. Here is a list of some of our favourite chants, the ones we sing often, and some that we have made up ourselves.

Many of the chants listed here are traditional Reclaiming songs; authors are mentioned where known. If no credit is given, or the wrong credit is given, and you know who it should be attributed to, please let us know! Feel free to use the chants we have written in your own work, but we would love to know who’s singing them, and to have any feedback on them, so please contact us!

We are currently in the process of creating and uploading mp3 files, as well as sheet music, but this may take a while.

Creatures of the Earth, run beside you
Creatures of the Fire, set our hearts aglow
Creatures of the Water, teach us how to flow

Never Lose our Way to the Well
by Starhawk, Rose May Dance, and Raven Moonshadow

We will never
Never lose our way to the well
Of her memory
And the power
Of the living flame it will rise
It will rise again

Like the grasses
Through the dark, through the soil, to the sunlight
We will rise again
We are thirsting
For the waters of life we are moving
We will live again

New Moon Night
by Jeffrey Alphonsus Mooney

New moon night, soon mars in sight
Deep silence finds us when the words aren’t right
Free us from fear, may our hearts sing clear
Make a spark through the dark for our soul’s delight

In between eternity and this moment in time
Opening my heart feels like opening my mind
Standing with the ancients with each breath I play a part
Opening my mind feels like opening my heart

[alternate descant-like bit]I see myself in you [repeat]

Activism and Montreal Reclaiming

Reclaiming witchcraft is deeply rooted in environmental and socio-political activism. As practitioners of an earth-based spirituality, we bring magic into action and action into magic, with the goal of changing global consciousness.

Our activism covers many areas, including:

  • environmentalism and sustainable living
  • feminism and women’s rights, including reproductive rights
  • LGBTQ rights
  • peace and non-violence
  • social justice and empowerment for individuals and communities

Food Activism

Food systems is of the main areas of activism that interests many of us who participate in Reclaiming in Montreal.

One of the easiest things we can do to reduce our impact on the environment is also one of the most effective. Below we’ve provided a list of actions that we can take, as well as some links to other organizations or sources of information promoting healthy and sustainable food habits.

Eating local foods…

  • dramatically reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions due to transportation
  • supports local farmers and the local economy
  • helps us become more aware of the changing seasons in our local environment
  • ensures better food quality due to reduced travel and stockage time

You can find local foods…

  • at farmer’s markets
  • at health food stores (a fairly comprehensive list can be found here, below the list of vegetarian restaurants)

What are some easy things we can do to reduce our impact on the environment?

March for Peace

In March, 2007, a group of us participated in the anti-war march and rally marking the 4th anniversary of the war in Iraq. We created colorful banners invoking the elements; some of them can be seen in this photo from the Montreal Mirror, behind the first group of people.

Past Events

Reclaiming has been active in Montreal for many years. Here are some of the past events that we know of!

Welcome!

Welcome to the new website for The Montreal Reclaiming community.

We are a loose-knit group of people located in and around Montreal, Quebec, who resonate with Reclaiming witchcraft. Some of us have been working and teaching within Reclaiming for many years, and some have more recently discovered it and are exploring the tradition. Many of us have other “core” traditions that we work in. We meet for ritual, workshops, activities, support and friendship.

We welcome all genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities, languages, ages, and differences in ability.
